This is what the discharge looks like just as the tube is fired by the trigger pulse.  Notice that the discharge begins inside the electrode and extends well out into the area of the tube which is covered by the spiral RF drive wire. Since the glow discharge is electrically conductive, this allows the RF signal from the spiral wires to quickly begin the discharge across the entire length of the tube at the beginning of each modulation cycle.
